New York Daily News cover is driving Fox News

More than 20,000 retweets have circulated the New York Daily News’s tweet last night debuting its provocative front page reacting to the San Bernardino mass shooting yesterday. The treatment skewers politicians — in this case, Ted Cruz, Rand Paul, Paul Ryan and Lindsey Graham — who…well, let’s just use the Daily News’s formulation: “As latest batch of Americans are left lying in pools of blood, cowards who could truly end gun scourge continue to hid behind meaningless platitudes.”

By another metric, too, the front page is reaching its intended audience: Fox News is republishing it.Today’s edition of “Fox & Friends,” the network’s pitiful morning program, verily organized itself around the New York Daily News’s front page. “Don’t say any prayers for the people of California. That, according to the Daily News,” said co-host Brian Kilmeade at the top of the show. “Yup, God isn’t listening. The Daily News knows this type of thing.”“I was so disturbed by that cover,” said co-host Elisabeth Hasselbeck, who went on to forge her very own interpretation of the anti-thoughts/prayers commentary: “I say this — if you want to line up with terrorists and try to take God away, you’re not on the right side. That’s all I’d have to say to those politicians who want to tell you to stop praying.”On it went: The “Fox & Friends” crowd welcomed Republican presidential candidate Carly Fiorina and asked her about the cover. She responded that the whole thing was an example of how the “left wing is afraid of our values.” The program even hauled in a contributor, Robert Jeffress, to opine on the matter. Host of Pathway to Victory, a national radio and television ministry, Jeffress said: “Look, prayer’s not some meaningless activity we engage in to make ourselves feel better. When we pray, we’re talking to somebody greater than ourselves and asking him to do some specific things — to heal those who are wounded, to give grace to those who’ve lost loved ones, to protect our law enforcement personnel. Prayer’s always the right thing we should do, it’s the first thing we should do, but it’s not the only thing we should do.” Jeffress argued that the remedies prescribed by the left aren’t worthwhile. In later segments, hosts talked about the matter with former New York mayor Rudy Giuliani — “how you can possibly criticize people who are talking about praying to God for help in a situation like this — you must not have lived though Sept. 11,” said Giuliani — and Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) — “some of the victims were actually tweeting out, ‘Pray for us,” said the senator. Looks like the Daily News has launched one of those “national conversations.”
